Cardiac Tests for Chest Pain: Understanding the Diagnostic Process

Cardiac Tests for Chest Pain: Understanding the Diagnostic Process

Chest pain is one of the most common reasons people visit us, and it is also one of the most frightening. At Dr. Navneet Imaging & Path Lab, we meet patients every week who cannot tell whether their discomfort is simple acidity, a pulled muscle, or an early warning from the heart. Symptoms alone cannot answer that question, which is why the right Cardiac Tests for Chest Pain, performed in the right order, matter so much.

Why We Never Advise Ignoring Chest Pain

Chest pain can arise from the heart, lungs, food pipe, muscles, ribs or even stress. Pain linked to the heart, often called angina, usually feels like pressure, tightness or heaviness in the centre of the chest. It may spread to the left arm, jaw, neck or back, and can come with sweating, breathlessness, nausea or unusual tiredness.

However, not every heart problem looks this way. In people with diabetes, in women and in older adults, we often see mild or unusual symptoms. That is why we always say: if you are unsure, get checked. A timely Cardiac Test can bring peace of mind or catch a problem early.

Step 1: Detailed History and Examination

Everything begins with a conversation. We ask when the pain started, how long it lasts, what triggers it and what relieves it. We also note your age, family history, smoking habits, blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol levels. This helps your doctor decide which tests are most useful for you.

Step 2: ECG (Electrocardiogram)

The ECG is always the first step. It measures the electrical activity of your heart in a few minutes and is totally painless. It will reveal whether there is any sign of a heart attack, irregularities or stress on the heart. The normal ECG is definitely reassuring, but it does not exclude everything, particularly when the pain is intermittent. This is why we do it along with other tests.

Step 3: Blood Tests

The blood test brings about vital information. Heart markers like Troponin can help determine any harm done to the muscles of the heart. We also have to test lipid profile, glucose levels, HbA1c,Blood Tests, renal profile, and haemoglobin because these have implications for heart health and the conduct of further procedures. Being a pathological laboratory, we take care of these samples.

Step 4: Echocardiography

The echocardiogram involves the use of sound waves to make pictures that show how your heart is working. This procedure tells you whether the chambers and valves are functioning properly and how effectively the heart pumps the blood. Moreover, the areas where the muscles do not move well can also be diagnosed in this way, indicating poor blood flow. Radiation is not used in the test.

Step 5: Stress Test (TMT)

If your pain appears during activity, a treadmill test may be advised. While you walk on a treadmill with increasing speed, we monitor your ECG, heart rate and blood pressure. Some heart conditions only show up when the heart is working harder, and this test reveals exactly that. It is one of the most commonly used Cardiac Tests for Chest Pain when doctors suspect blocked arteries.

Step 6: CT Scan of the Heart

If previous results are not conclusive or there is a need for more thorough imaging of the blood vessels, then CT scan may prove useful. Coronary calcium score CT is used for measuring the level of calcium accumulation in your heart arteries that determines your chronic risk. Coronary angiography CT provides a more detailed image of possible blockages or narrowing because of contrast dye. The scan lasts just a few minutes and is not invasive. Your doctor will tell you if it is suitable for you.

Step 7: Angiography, If Needed

In case there is a possibility that a blockage is present, the cardiologist might advise angiography, which is performed in a hospital. It is our task to ensure that the process leading to that point is correct and timely.
